Half-Way

We are half-way through our journey, 14 days left to be exact. This time in two weeks I will be mid-flight between Miami and Wilmington. I have done a lot of reflecting over the last few days what with my last day of teaching yesterday and the transition into counting down the days before I leave. I have many tasks to complete before I leave but I truly have plenty of time. I am enjoying each day with a consistent routine of meditation that has been incredibly therapeutic. This routine keeps me grounded and helps me remain self-aware.

The last day of school yesterday was bitter sweet. I taught my last lesson of the semester. My students and teacher bid me farewell and wished me good luck in the future. I still have several loose ends to tie up upon my return after break at the high school so I will be able to lay eyes on some of them again in a few weeks. Many students shared with me their desire to have me take over their classroom. I took final pictures of some of my classes and a few of them wrote me letters. I have such pride and gratitude in my heart for my experience there.

I have decided on my project where we have to select a local issue and document it in a short video. I am going to talk about culture and how ancient tradition, language and ritual in Belize is becoming obsolete. There are so many cultures that the Belizean people identify, the main ones being Creole, Garifuna and Maya. However, most of them struggle with preserving their culture that has become diffused because of the changing times. This issue is one that is near and dear to most Belizean people and almost all of them are willing to talk about their ancestry. I wanted to choose a topic that would reflect a real problem that most people here deal with but one that is not simply fixed. I could have focused on the over-abundance and infestation of sea grass or the pollution problem here on the island. However, I would much prefer an issue that would allow me to talk with people and learn about their culture and society in a ore intimate way that they are comfortable with. I am going to start my interviews this week when we leave for the mainland on Thursday, that way I can meet people inland as well as the local people I have gotten to know here in San Pedro.

We will be gone until Monday; we have been advised to go inland for the holiday because San Pedro becomes very crowded. We will have all sorts of adventures like splunking in some caves. visiting the national zoo, hiking, exploring Mayan ruins and much more I am sure. I will update this with all of my adventures probably after Easter.

Quick note about today, we discovered a yoga studio around the corner on the island where we can practice for the remainder the the trip. It is a beautiful set up on the third floor of a building. The space is about 500 square feet and completely open air. There is a small roof over the area but it was open to the ocean air breeze. With a view of all the surrounding buildings that stand only about two stories and all of the tree tops this space is so peaceful and serene. I am looking forward to continuing my practice here in Belize.
