Happy Hump Day!

This week has been great so far. I have been continuing my routine of waking up to watch the sunrise, meditate and reflect. I did sleep in on Tuesday and I might tomorrow only because we do not have to be at school until 9am instead of 7:50. It is Drug Awareness Week at the school and we are promoting the phrase, "Put a Cap on Drugs". We have little red ribbons to wear, we had a school assembly, door decorating contest, skits, presentations and tomorrow is a short marathon run in the morning tomorrow. I have attached some photos of some of the festivities.

I have been teaching my lessons this week and I have started to get to know each of the classes more personally. The students are really enjoying my presence I believe. They have been pretty receptive to my teaching and hopefully when they are assessed Friday and Tuesday of next week I will know how much they have really learned. There is no school on Monday due to testing of the primary school students who are using the high school facilities so we will help substitute at the primary school for the middle grades. I also plan to get a big chunk of my last big project for my final graduate class accomplished that day as well.

The iguanas are making their presence known to me over the last few days. The flowers are incredible as well right now, in full bloom. I have attached some pictures. I have acquired two nicknames, one at school with the teachers, they call me Ireland. I told them that my name means Ireland in Gaelic and so all the male teachers now call me that. It is a nice way to make it known that I am part of the gang I think. My fellow teachers have also given me a nick name which I LOVE, 'Freebird'. I have never had nick names so this is pretty exciting.

I am really feeling as though I have a newfound confidence in not just my teaching but in my character as a whole. I am feeling empowered and grateful to have such a rare and meaningful experience. Thank you to all of you who have given me support, love, patience and advice over the last few years, it really means so much to me.

Balloons released, not great for the environment but a great message about dangerous drug use.

  1. The school you work at seems to me really active with events and festivities, that's great!! I definitely think kids respond to hands on activities and engagement rather than just sitting in a classroom being lectured all day.
I am glad you are feeling confident and happy! I think confidence comes w the realization that you're doing all this on ur own and killing it! I had the same feeling when I moved. Keep on keepin on sista
