Friday's Science Fair and First Weekend

Friday's science fair was very impressive. I was so surprised by the thoughtfulness and relevancy that the students showed in their work. Most all of the projects were related to the ecology of Belize and based upon problems that are prevalent in San Pedro. A lot was based around renewable energy and utilizing the resources abundant in San Pedro to potentially solve those problems. I have attached many pictures of the experiments that I loved the most.

The students provide snacks and treats for the visitors and probed with the many questions that I asked gave me immediate, well thought out responses. They clearly were very prepared for this event. Some of them even provide samples of some of what they created and showed us parts of their actual experiment. San Pedro High School takes great pride in this fair every year and we learned a bit about how the fair has grown, developed and changed in previous years. The students have great pride in this event and they call off classes for the whole day so that all of the students can attend. Visitors from other schools, primary and pre-k classes all come to visit as well. It is really a community-wide event.

This was a great start to the weekend which consisted of relaxing in the sunshine and venturing around the island. We have access to this beautiful beach resort and can lounge around there whenever we like. They also offer great deals if we want to sail, kayak, snorkel, paddle board, dive and much more. I got a little too much sun on Saturday and am paying for it now but I know that it is doing wonders for my serotonin.

    The kids look like they're enjoying themselves!! Is English a dominant language there? Glad you're expiring and getting out! Good for u

Adventures Inland 2

Saturday was the day we adventured on our own and a group of us decided to go to some ruins about 8 miles from San Ignacio. We took a bus to a ferry and took it about 20 yards across the river. The most beautiful green, blue, teal river I have ever seen. Then we walked one mile uphill to the ruins, which were incredible. They were my favorite ruins that we saw. We climbed to the top of every single one and took in the views of the valley and mountain range around us. We could easily see San Ignacio in the distance and Guatemala was a short distance to the west. The foliage around the ruins was beautiful, trees, flowers, and all sorts of greenery. Day Two

Today began at 5 am Belize time. I set my alarm to wake me up at 7 am but unfortunately the clock on my phone has not changed to Belize time so I got up and going before my roommate politely mentioned the time to me,...5:30. Thankfully I was wide awake and ready to begin my day so I biked down to the beach and watched the sunrise, read my book, Surfing the Himalayas and meditated for a bit before biking around. I want to familiarize myself with San Pedro has quickly as I can and biking seems to be the best way. While many roads are unpaved and quite rocky, I can maneuver down most alleyways and back roads fairly quickly and easily via beach cruiser. It was a beautiful morning and I got to see San Pedro wake up and open up shop. The trees, plants and animals are some of the things I love the most about traveling to a new place and I must say the flora and fauna here is unlike anything I have ever seen. Week of April 3rd-7th

This last week of teaching has been very satisfying. My relationship with many of the students is a lot better than I ever thought they would be when starting out. They enjoy my presence in the classroom and they also seem to be learning fairly well, especially having experienced this quick transition having a stranger take over teaching. I have learned how patient I have come to be through teaching over the last few months. Being in Belize has really given me a lesson in harnessing my confidence and jumping in head first. Not knowing who I would be teaching, what specific content I would be teaching, how many students I would have and what the teacher would expect from me, I truly believe I have done my best. I have a newfound security in my abilities as a teacher.
