Day Two

Today began at 5 am Belize time. I set my alarm to wake me up at 7 am but unfortunately the clock on my phone has not changed to Belize time so I got up and going before my roommate politely mentioned the time to me,...5:30. Thankfully I was wide awake and ready to begin my day so I biked down to the beach and watched the sunrise, read my book, Surfing the Himalayas and meditated for a bit before biking around. I want to familiarize myself with San Pedro has quickly as I can and biking seems to be the best way. While many roads are unpaved and quite rocky, I can maneuver down most alleyways and back roads fairly quickly and easily via beach cruiser. It was a beautiful morning and I got to see San Pedro wake up and open up shop.

The trees, plants and animals are some of the things I love the most about traveling to a new place and I must say the flora and fauna here is unlike anything I have ever seen. I have attached some great photographs at the bottom of what I have seen so far. Upon biking home I stopped at the first open cafe that had fresh coffee brewing. I sat outside a while, drank my coffee, wrote in my journal and watched people bustle down the road to begin their Monday. My goal is to try and experience every moment with great awareness and attentiveness. I hope to document as much as I can and through reflection of my days and experiences I hope to retain rich and vibrant memories.

We visited the primary and secondary schools today and when we arrived at the secondary school we were told that the best day to begin would be tomorrow (Tuesday) so we had the day to explore. We ventured down to the beach front that we have access too, staying with our gracious host, Peter at Pedro's Inn and Hotel. After laying in a hammock over the ocean for a bit, yes, over the ocean, and admiring all the cool fish swimming underneath me, we visited a few fresh fruit stands to grab a small lunch. I have been eating incredible street food that I wish I could bring home and let all of you try but that just means I will have to come back with friends and family at some point in the future. I plan to continue my day relaxing and navigating throughout the town before settling in and getting some research done.

Side note: Reading this book, Surfing the Himalayas has got me thinking about positivism and the power of altering the formula for success and happiness. This directly ties into one of my assignments this week, which was to watch this video. So, I encourage you to watch this! TED Talk
